“Did you know Doug is based on Henrico County?” Asks Guy Who Just Fucking Got Here

RICHMOND, Va. — Inserting the fact into each conversation he’s had in the last three weeks, new Richmond resident Michael Barlow has made a habit of letting all new acquaintances know that the Nickelodeon animated series “Doug” was based on creator Jim Jinkins’s childhood in Henrico County.

“I just think it’s a pretty cool fact that a show we all loved growing up is based off where we live now,” Barlow told reporters, excited that a nostalgic part of his childhood was connected to his current home. “I wonder if everyone else around here knows. It seems like it could be one of the lesser known facts about the city.”

Friends indicate that Barlow simply will not stop talking about “Doug.” Rachel Richards, one of his new roommates, claims she wishes she knew less about the 90’s show.

“Did you know that Moody Middle School is the basis for Judy Funnie’s high school? Did you know the Four-Leaf Clover Mall was based on Chesterfield’s Cloverleaf Mall? It’s like, ‘Jesus, dude, we all have access to Wikipedia, too,’” a frustrated Richards said. “The creator of ‘Breaking Bad’ is from Richmond, too, but you don’t see me telling everyone about where he used to take piano lessons.”

Barlow’s other friends echo Richards’s sentiments, noting that “Doug” wasn’t the first instance of Barlow trying to fit in. “First it was the facts about the breweries,” coworker Jessica Lewis said. “Next it was about how VCU has bought up so much land downtown. Dammit man, act like you’ve been here.”

Reports around the city indicate that other Richmond transplants have been acting similarly to Barlow. A study conducted by The Peedmont found that 83 percent of new residents spent over an hour each night for a week googling facts about Richmond and then dropping them in conversations.

“How many more people born in Reston are going to come up to me with ‘Doug’ facts?” Lewis continued. “Michael has been annoying as shit lately. It makes me wish people still associated Richmond with homicides.”
