Two Hours of Jet Noise Added to Something in the Water Festival Lineup

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. — Officials with the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau have announced a last minute agreement with the the U.S. Navy to add an additional two hours of jet noise to the Something in the Water Festival planned for this weekend.

The additional noise is part of a public relations campaign aimed at strengthening the Virginia Beach oceanfront’s association with jet noise. Throughout the weekend festival-goers will be treated to additional flybys as the naval commanders have ordered two extra squadrons from the nearby Naval Air Station Oceana to perform training exercises just off the coast.

Molly Patrick, a representative with the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the additional flybys are part of a public relations strategy aim at strengthening the oceanfront’s association with jet noise.  “We can’t make them stop,” Patrick said. “So let’s embrace it. What is more authentically Virginia Beach than listening to an F/A-18 Super Hornet make low passes at Mach two all day long?”

Patrick admits they did not inform festival organizers of the extra flybys and expects that not everyone will see the added noise as a welcome addition. However, she’s optimistic the city has made right choice as drowning out Diplo for a few seconds will likely be viewed as a valuable public service.
