Rocketts Landing Resident Assures Friends in the Fan “It’s Really Not That Far Away”
RICHMOND, Va. — Local resident McKayla Turner recently moved from her rental apartment in the Fan to a townhouse that she purchased in Rocketts Landing. However, she discovered that it’s been very difficult to convince her friends who live uptown to come down to her area.
“They keep saying that it’s too far and that there’s nothing down here,” Turner told reporters. “But there are two really fancy restaurants, The Boathouse and Conch Republic, plus I’m right next to the river. Not to mention that the Urban Farmhouse next to my building has live music every Sunday morning. That’s worth driving halfway across town for, right?”

Rocketts Landing is an urban neighborhood with townhouses and condominiums in a quiet community next to the James River, just east of Shockoe Bottom. The area has gained popularity among residents who want to get away from the commotion of the city but still want to live nearby. It is this distance, however, that has made it difficult for residents to convince others to visit.
“There was this one time I tried to get my friend Debbie to come over for a small get together with some neighbors on a Friday night,” Turner explained. “She bailed at the last minute ‘because she was tired.’ I knew that meant she didn’t feel like venturing down here. Of course, I see her post on Facebook 20 minutes later that she’s at Flora. Go figure.”
Turner added that because she has to pay $250 in amenity fees each month, “I’m trying to get as much use out of my pool and fitness center as possible, so I’d really rather stay here than go somewhere else. Besides, my friends can use them too, so it’s win-win.”
When reached for comment, Turner’s friend Sara Walker told reporters, “We just don’t really feel like making that trip all the time. Her townhouse is nice, I guess, but it’s not really worth the 15 minute drive to sit and stare at the river.”
At press time, Turner was seen texting feverishly and then getting an Uber up to the Fan.
