Joe Morrissey Vows To Lower Voting Age From 18 to 17 if Elected

RICHMOND, Va. — In an effort to sway youth voters, Sen. Joe Morrissey (D-16th) announced his proposal to lower the voting age from 18 to 17 if elected to the late Rep. Donald McEachin’s congressional seat.

The proposal, which political analysts have labeled as somewhere between puzzling, tone-deaf, and pretty on-brand, is unlikely to gain much traction.

“Our youths deserve the right to fully explore their voting desires,” Morrissey explained in a statement, adding that he believes a person 17 years of age has fully matured and is able to make rational political decisions. “I pledge to fight for our young people so they can consent and participate in traditional democracy by voting for whatever they feel in their hearts.”

In addition to lowering the voting age to 17, Morrissey’s proposal would allow a provision for polling stations to bypass identification restrictions and allow voters access to ballots if they look “close enough.” Though Morrissey stands to lose some support over this odd proposal, his campaign has assured the public that these objections are “premature.”
